  “One minute,” said Brent, his fingers digging deep into the padding on the arms of his wheel chair. As the final seconds ticked away, a drop of blood trickled out of his nose.

  “We did it! We’re clear!” cried Jacob as both nurses yanked the temple receptor off the men’s heads at the same time.

  “I guess our handicap saved our lives,” said Brent, panting.

  “You’ve saved a lot of lives today, gentlemen,” said Shorter. “And you’ve earned yourselves a trip home. Good job.”

  “Thank you, Sir,” said both men.

  “And from now on, all G23 operations will be manned by a twin DAS team. We’ll have to train twice as many specialists, but it’ll be worth it. You’ve set a new standard, and discovered a new safety protocol. This paradigm will change warfare as we know it.”

  “Let’s get you two into some clean clothes and ship you out,” said Anne.

  Jacob looked over at his friend Brent, who sat there bald, sweating, and legless. “Well, buddy. Looks like you won’t have to worry about getting executed by a global Caliphate.”

  Brent looked down at his broken body and smiled. “Nope. I’m just glad to be alive, and ready to move on to the next phase of my life.”
